I did it! I spent a BDS session reading for Comps. Finally. Whew :) And you know what? It felt good!
My BDS was 25 minutes. I set the alarm on my phone at 10:20 for 10:30 and put my phone in the other room. When I heard it go off, I got up off the couch, walked in, clicked snooze, and stretched a bit. Then I worked back on the couch until it went off at 10:45. At that time, I got up, stretched, and turned my phone off. 25 minutes is a good amount of time--good enough for tonight :)
During my BDS, I read the intro material for Terms of Work for Composition: A Materialist Critique by Bruce Horner (published in 2000). The book is a cultural material critique of discourse on work in Composition, and so far I'm finding it very interesting. He traces how terms like work, students, politics, academic, traditional, and writing compete to construct the identity of Composition as a field. One of the reasons I like this approach is because it looks at writing and teaching as "work" and not just divine inspiration from the muses. I think Boice would approve :)
Next time, on this project, I will continue where I left off (page 2--the intro wasn't part of the actual page numbers), and I'll follow up on some ideas and sources that I wanted to find on the internet.
Also, as I was reading, I did tongue checks to make sure I was relaxed--it was tough at first because I was really tense, but it got easier with time.
Tomorrow morning, then, I'm going to spend 20-30 minutes on WGST 1120 work. And in class tomorrow, I think I'll do more Comps and bring my book to read :)
